I truly apologize for your experience with our sales representative. Customer satisfaction is extremely important to us. As a member of the Customer Service Management Team for Empire, I wanted to let you know that we review each and every concern that is brought to our attention. I HAD AN EMPIRE CARPET REPRESENTATIVE COME TO MY HOME TO DO AN ESTIMATE ON WOOD FLOORING AND NEVER HAVE I BEEN MORE DISRESPECTED IN MY LIFE ONLY TO NOT EVEN RECIEVE AN ESTIMATE ON THE COSTS OF DOING MY HOME. I AM A YOUNG HOMEOWNER WHO WAS REPEATEDLY ASKED WHERE THE OWNER OF MY HOME WAS, HE REFERED TO ME AS PRETTY LADY AND TOLD ME WHAT WE WOULD BE DOING IF I WAS IN NEW ORLEANS WITH HIM, HE WASHED HIS FACE IN MY KITCHEN SINK AND USED MY BATHROOM, HE TOLD ME THAT I SHOULDN'T GET WOOD FLOORING THAT IT WAS *** BECAUSE I SHOULDNT PUT ANYMORE MONEY INTO MY HOUSE BECAUSE I COULD NEVER CONVINCE HIM TO BUY IT OR ANYONE ELSE.

I SHOULD HAVE KICKED HIM OUT OF MY HOUSE LONG BEFORE BUT AFTER 2 HOURS OF THIS I JUST WANTED TO GET MY QUOTE. HE CONTINUED TO HAGGLE ME ABOUT MAKING A DECISION "TODAY" RATHER THAN DISCUSSING THEIR FLOORING,WARRANTIES AND FINANCING, ETC. WHEN I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS NOT RUSHING INTO A DECISION TODAY HE GAVE ME A BOGUS QUOTE AND WOULD NO LONGER SPEAK WITH ME. HE TOLD ME FOR MY CONDO THAT IT WOULD BE $6,000 WHEN I ASKED HIM FOR 3 DIFFERENT QUOTES 2 BEING LAMINATE THE 3RD BEING HARDWOOD (BUT FOR SOME REASON IT WAS THE SAME PRICE FOR ALL 3).

HE THEN WALKED OUT OF MY HOUSE DIDN'T ANSWER MY QUESTIONS WHICH I WAS ASKING HIM AS HE WAS WALKING OUT OF MY HOUSE.

I DON'T KNOW IF HE THOUGHT HE WAS WASTING HIS TIME OR IF HE WAS UPSET ABOUT THE FACT THAT I, A YOUNG FEMALE, AM SUCCESSFUL BUT HE IS AN *** BECAUSE I AM GETTING WOOD FLOORING DONE IN MY HOME, NOT TO MENTION I WORK IN THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY AND COULD HAVE REFERRED EMPIRE OUT BUT IN NO WAY WILL I EVER REFER THEM TO ANY OF MY FRIENDS OR FAMILY. I CANNOT IMAGINE WHY ANYONE WOULD HIRE THIS MAN TO WORK AS A REPRESENTATIVE FOR THEIR COMPANY.

Arrangement were made for Empire to come out on the Saturday after Thanksgiving between ll am and 1 pm. Instructed to be prepared two hours before and two hours after scheduled appointment.

I, the decision maker, was up and ready for the estimator at 8 am.

Finally, at 4:50 pm I called Empire. They had not heard from the representative either!!!! The incident would be reported to the field manager.

Today is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving @ 4:15pm and I have not heard from anyone at Empire about no call, no show - just a waste of my day.

What a way to do business! Maybe I better be grateful I found out now that not one of them has the integrity to pick up the phone.

I scheduled an appointment with Empire Today and I found that they are *** expensive. Their original price to install laminate floors on 680 square feet, was $10,000. With their "generous" 60% off sale, the price was knocked down to $7,500...but still, 7,500? calculating 10% waste, that's $10 per square foot! I could get marble installed for that price. I felt this was outrageous, I talked the salesman down to 5k, but that was as low as he would go. I thought about it for a while and agreed, based on the fact that the quality of the flooring seemed to be good and they gave a 30 year warranty. Then the salesperson encouraged me to lie about my income so that I would be eliigable for enough credit to cover the cost of the job. After that, the salesman really was rushing me to schedule the installation.

I live in an apartment and I can't make modifications to my home unless I have approval from the condominium association and I explained this to the salespreson several times, but he was insistant that I schedule the installation right then and there and did not really seem to care about this. Once the salesman left, things just did not feel right.

Thankfully, as a purchaser, you have three days to exercise your right to cancel the job. I thought about all of the red flags that seemed to pop up during this process and talked it over with my wife and we felt like the whole operation was very shady and over priced and we canceled. After reading the other comments on this thread, I am very glad that I did not go with Empire Today and will go with a local contractor.

Warning: Empire Carpeting

As a member of our Customer Service Management Team, I apologize that you were dissatisfied with our professional installation and your Empire Carpet purchase. This is not how we usually handle our Empire carpet installations or customer service. Customer satisfaction is extremely important to us and we do our best to provide a resolution to customers that experience problems. It is not uncommon for new carpet to shed for up to 120 days. The main reason for carpet shedding is due to loose fiber left from the milling process. Installers did not live up to promises made by salesman to do one room at a time. Tore apart my home, damaged walls & baseboard, dropped and broke a television. Rude attitude, poor or no English spoken. Certainly no relation to the warm and fuzzy gentlemen featured on thier commericials. Only after series of complaint calls did anyone return to complete installation in my closets, as originally contracted.

Carpet quality is less than promised. Fuzz continued to come up & clog my vacuum for more months than ever experienced before. I paid for extra padding, which was not worth the expense. Hard to see any difference between the standard and more costly.

Hope to discourage others from falling for their line of bull.

Empire Carpet is cheap .It's not worth the money they charge. In less than 1 year.

My carpet started to look like it was 10 years old.

The carpet wore out quickly. The installers diden't speak a lick of english.

#77926

The carpet layers were in such a hurry to get done that now I have speed bumps in my carpet. I tried one person that does restretching but said he couldn't do it. Over all the installation was shoddy.

I've worked for Empire as a Salesperson and there sales system is so amature. There is a series of price cuts and it starts by calling a manager to get a lower price.

They never expect to get the first price offered. They claim to save you money by skiping the middleman and bring the showroom to your house, but they are the middleman.

Their prices are as high or higher than any other carpet store. I have to say they do try to make the customer happy, but there is no savings and the quality of most of the carpet is just average.

Just a little back round on our environment. My wife and I live alone [ with a dog who joined the family about 4 months before the reported problem in a 3000 plus square foot home. Our home is very clean with professional cleaners every week. We have lived in our home for 32 years it has be updated on numerous occasions. W have re-carpeted more times then I care to think about and never had any problems Our air conditions systems (4) are all equipped with hepa filters, we are clean freaks and our combined weight is less than 300 lbs. My wife weighs a 100 lbs and I'm about 170. I work full time. The point is that our home does not get an extraordinary amount of traffic.

I had Empire Carpet install Berber carpet install in two large rooms and in our halls and staircase. After a short period (18 months) of time the carpet showed wear on the edges of our steps (there are two stair cases) [ all the traffic is not on only one stair case] and the loops were pulling out. Some were even under the lip of the stairs.

We called Empire and they sent an "independent" inspector. (the fact that he was a sales person for their largest competitor in my mind did not make him independent). In his report he made general observations of various of the homes mechanical systems and other thing that were for the most part inaccurate. He also did not mention that at all entrances to the home(4) there were multiply industrial mats inside and outside to minimize soil coming into the home. In the winter we actually have runners by the entrance doors over the hardwood floors that collect most of the soil before you even hit the carpeted sections

He determined that the carpet was not cleaned enough and the cleaning would raise the matted pile. The very light colored carpet showed no sign of soiling. We also were not informed that the carpet should be cleaned every year when we purchased it. He also determined that my dog is having an adverse affect on the carpet. Again I was not informed that "pets" could not be in a home when this carpet is used. We also showed him other rooms that have 10 year old Berber carpet that is just as light of color and it shows no loops pulled out and no "matting". He had no comment.

I feel that the carpet is of very inferior quality and the refuse to stand behind. I asked them to revisit the issue and they refused. I was a big fan of Empire as the initial sales and installation process was very pleasant. I actually mentioned it to quit a few of my friend and associates but I now regret that.

I had an Empire sales consultant come to my home to give me their free in-home, no obligation estimate. The woman showed up late, she pushed me to make a decision on agreeing to sign up for the installation.

While she was figuring out the final estimate, my husband walks in the front door, and I quickly told him the estimate. He said he wanted to think about that estimate. So I said to the sales woman that my husband likes to think things over before he purchases anything. Before my husband walked in the door, I was home alone with my 4 children.

The sales woman says to me with an attitude, " I don't have that kind of a problem because I have a job!" This *** had no idea if I had a job or not. Then she failed to tell me that I had 30 days to sit on the estimate. She tried to talk me into signing up for the installation and said that I had 3 days to cancel. She left me with no quote, told me it costs Empire to send her out for additional visits and that the consultants work on commissions only!

This was the most unprofessional sales consultant I have ever dealt with! I will never deal with this sneaky company again!

In-Home Sales Reps need to try to close the deal that day, or they are in the wrong profession...

As a consumer, you are right... You don't need to tolerate unprofessional or inexperience reps (at your expense), and you should ALWAYS get at least Three Quotes from reputable services. From what you said, I wouldn't have bought either.

#73815

After reading some of the comments and feedback that was left here, I must say that I laughed at how unrealistic everyone is. The most important thing empire needs to remember is customer service is above everything, always act professional and courteous to the consumer.

Secondly, consumers are entitlted to getting as many estimates as they feel comfortable with before making a decision, especially without there spouse. We encourage our customers to shop our price and service because no one can compete with our excellence.

#71487

Wow, in reading these comments, Americans are getting stupider and stupider by the moment.

Empire fails to abide by their offerings. People are entitled to shop around for the best price. Empire offers a free, in-home, no obligation estimate and they should stand by their promises.

#71206

Alright Cash Flow and Realistic Person, ease up! Obviously she can't make a decision without her husband. And he'll probably want to think about it for a few years while the price goes up and their current floors get worse and worse.

#71204

You said she had no idea whether you had a job or not. Well, do you?

Don't talk **** if it's a good point. She shouldn't have been a b**** but you should have bought.

It's Empire! Why not?

#71202

Well, in her defense, if it was a guaranteed price, there is nothing wrong with her asking you to move forward at that moment. Dont have someone at your house if you are not ready to make a decision.

My wife and I decided to get new carpet in the home that we recently moved in to. We called empire for an estimate and scheduled an appointment for 3-5 pm. They never showed so we called them to see what's going on. They said they are running behind and they could be there around 9pm. I just canceled because I had to work in the morning.

Months later we decide to try again. This time the salesman was on time. He took what seemed to be very fast and inacurate measurements and did not even write all of them down.

When we sat down to discuss pricing, he said we have 1700 sq feet and that it would cost $6000. He then said let me make a phone call and get the price lowered for you. After his phone call he quoted us $4400. For the mid grade carpet. He also tried to talk us out of getting the premium grade carpet.

We decided to get a second opinion from home depot. I told home depot what empire quoted me and they said that I should do my own measuring. I measured and came up with 1250 sq ft!! That's a 450 sq ft difference. After calculating in a Premium carpet, padding and install, home depot came out about the same price. Home depot will also be sending out a company that specializes in measuring and they assured me they will take very accurate measurements.

Also, when I asked the Empire salesmen how many sq feet our staircase was he could not give me a staight answer. He said that you can't measure stairs in sq ft. When I asked home depot about this, she said that thats not true and she would not lie to me because she does not get commission.

The Empire salemen also had a strong odor of alcohol that both me and my wife noticed.

I wish I would have read these comments before buying from Empire. We only needed our bedroom done.

It was measured by Empire at 30 square feet and we were quoted a price of 1100.00!...we too got the let me make a phone call deal...he came back with 900.00. Well, our carpet was installed yesterday and we had enough left over to do half the room again. My husband's measurements are 23 sq feet. We paid for 200.00 worth of carpeting that we don't need.

I called them today with my complaint.

They say someone will return my call within 1-3 business days. We'll see...

#76963

Sounds like you are a glutten for punishment. Why don't you go to an independent flooring specialist and get the job done right.

Home Depot is great for nails and hardware but not for professionally installed projects. You can find as many complaints against Home Depot as you find on Empire.

#74424

:( :cry :upset :) I had a similar experience with over measuring with a differnt carpet company. While they were installing I had to go out to check if my carpet was getting wet since the roll was hanging out the back of their van.

I noticed a tag on the carpet, its measurement, and our name on it. I found out that they brought less amount of carpet, but was not going to tell me.

We had thought their measurements were too much and we were right. We were refunded almost $700.

#68160

Electronic measuring device said my room was 25.6 by 14.5 when it is 21.6 by 11.6. Made the consultant use regular tape measure and I was right.

Also got the "let me make a phone call" routine and thought price was a little steep, but liked the vinyl he had so we are going to have them install.

Consultant was not pushy and did inform me installers spoke mostly Spanish. If I did not know room size though, I would have been ripped off.

#63698

I had a similar problem with Empire as well. I got pulled in with their "buy 1 room get 2 rooms free" commercial so I figured it couldn't be over 5k for the whole house.

First of all I knew what my sq ft was but didn't tell him. He had me pick the products...12x12 tile (they had nothing bigger) & cheaper carpet then gave me a quote based on his measurements of almost 1800 sq ft. I almost passed out. His quote WITH the free rooms came out to 13k after discounts!!

Then he said "let me make a call to see if we can lower that". He came back and said they dropped it to 8.5k. Here I'm thinking "how can we go from 28k regular price to 13k with discounts and free rooms THEN drop it even more to 8k? Well I knew all I had was 1400 sq ft so I said I'd think about it...NOT!

I called in my LOCAL tile company and they measured 14oo sq ft and quoted me UNDER 5k for mid grad carpet and 20x20 tile....sold! They did an awesome job.

Empire is WAY too overpriced and they measure BIGGER then they need saying they need to make room for wastage. Wastage can't be 400 sq ft more and their products are the same as everyone elses.

Paid $5000 to have ceramic tile floor installed over 400sq. ft. Within one month the floor was coming loose, grout cracking.

Came back to install floor. They stuffed wood with nails down my vents, grout on walls and wood trim, killed parts of my front yard and used my side yard as a waste site from buckets.

Do not fall for the sales pitch. They are not the best. Broken piece of tile used to install in closet, and on and on.

Don't expect them to clean up after themselves. I will be happy to talk to anyone about it.

I had to replace the carpet in the hallways/staircase of a three story three family in Boston. I had used

Empire before, so gave them a call and got an estimate. The price was $4.53 per sq. ft. installed. To

say that the salesperson was incompetent would be generous. He had to measure everything three

times, could not do simple calculations. He made so many mistakes on the order crossing things out

two and three times that it was unreadable. He told me that I had to put down a third of the total cost

because it was a special order and would take 10-14 days to get the carpet. Then in the next breath

said that it could be installed the next day.

Came up with an estimate of $3,692 based and 774.26 sq ft. I said that seemed high. He said: no,

and that this was a big area. I asked if there was an additional labor charges since this was a

staircase. He re-iterated: no, it's a flat fee. I agreed to remove and dispose of the old carpet to save

$200. He called the office and the lowered price for $3,001 was agreed upon. When I ripped up the

carpet I looked at them and concluded that there was no way that this was close to 800 sq ft. I

measured it and came out with 304 sq ft. I am an architect with 30 yrs experience and an expert in

this area. I had a third person measure it and he came up with 305 sq ft.

Granted it was a staircase with more waste than normal, but over150%. I called the office and

complained. A manager came out and first he said was that in the order was written for 680 sq. ft.,

not the original 774.26 sq. ft. that the basis for the quote. He also confirmed that the price included

installation and that there was not a separate labor charge. When I asked why there was no

adjustment and that the price still reflected the original 774.26 sq. ft. he had no answer. He also

confirmed that it was in stock. No one has ever explained why I had put up $1,000 deposit instead of

the standard $25. A question that remains unanswered to this day.

He measured and came up with 502 sq. ft. Not sure how using the same equation they came up with

three different sizes for the same square footage of floor space. He told me that he would give me a

$500 credit. I said OK and the installation was scheduled for the next day. I really didn't have much

of a choice, as I stood to lose the $1,000 deposit.

The installers arrived with the work order where the price was still $3,001. There also was a note to

call after the work was done. When I told them that this is not the right price, they called to the

office before they started, but the manager didn't want to talk. I took the phone and reminded that we

agreed to lower price by at least $500. He answered that he would discuss the final price after

installation. The installers installed and I called to manager again. This time, he said the bill was

$2,800. I reminded him again that he had agreed to a $500 credit from the $3001. He denied that he

had ever having agreed to that. Among the scrap was a single piece 12ft x 6ft =72 sq.ft and I tried to

get a credit for it. I tried to pay for 430 sq ft instead the 502 sq. ft. (502-72=430), the amount actually

installed plus waste. He said: no. So I said that I would pay for every sq in that was in the truck. I

took out my calculator and computed: $4.53 x 502 sq.ft + 5% (taxes)= $2,387.76. He said: no, that

$2,601 was the best he could do. I reminded him that the contract was for $4.53 per sq. ft. for 502

sq.ft. not for 545 sq.ft. (There was a total 502 sq. ft. of carpet in the truck). I still questioned the 58%

waste (based on 502 sq, ft., not the 545 sq. ft. that I was charged for), but have decided to drop it

He pretty much demanded the new higher price even though he could offer no explanation as to how

he came to that price. He also told me that I had to pay it since it had already been installed even

hough the new higher price had never been discussed. So, I paid $2, 601. Very expensive carpet for

the 305 sq. ft. of floor space!

Empire Today Customer Care

I wish I had done the effort to review Empire first before buying from them, it would had saved me a nightmare and a lot of money!!

Even the salesman stated that: "Buy One Room, Get Two Free is not what is seems". Unfortunately, this commercial misguided me! Having great experiences with Lowes, Home Depot and a mom-and-pop carpet store in the past for different properties, I should have stayed with them. Empire is nothing comparing to above businesses!

The crew (contracters hired by Empire so they escape Workers Comp and all insurances) was downright rude and unprofessional. My son, daughter-in-law and myself were following up the work, but I was stunned when my daughter-in-law informed my the crew was talking in a not so very nice way about us in Spanish! It became very clear that our presence was not wanted, of course not, as we could witness the "PATCHWORK" that we received!!

The misery started already from the beginning: the carpet colors the've brought was a mix up: the color ordered for the bedrooms is now installed in the living room and vica versa. For hours, we couldn't reach the salesman... because he was "in classes." But, of course, it all seemed to be the fault of the customer. The living room came last to install and soon it was clear the piece of carpet had wrong measurements: the crew went back and forth, measuring, scratching their hair... measuring again.Upon my question or everything was OK, I received a dirty look and the statement "that everything was correct"... did they assume I'm simple??? To make a long story short, we observed our brand new carpet layed out completely on the road (???), from end-to-end and corner-to corner and have pics to prove this, while the crew was walking back and forth on it with dirty shoes, measuring for the hundred time. Needless to tell we have a patchwork living room new, small pieces of carpet were used to fill up spaces with large and small rectangles.

To my horror, we spotted three small black spots, what seemed to me like oil from a car. But again, this also was OUR fault! Although the fact that we were wearing socks only on the carpet, and were not the ones rolling the carpet over the road and walking over it with dirty shoes, we were blamed for it. We even received a phonecall from "customer service" to stay out of the house until the work (read: "mess") was finished???????? I beg you pardon?? See, I'm a business owner myself and I know very well that, if I would treat my customers this way, tomorrow I would have no customer left over.

Empire, you've made it so clear: from the moment you have our monies, you couldn't care less anymore!!! I can conclude only one thing, you should be ashamed and a letter to the BBB WILL follow!

EMPIRE, NEVER AGAIN... NOT EVEN FOR FREE, SAID ENOUGH???

The only thing I did enjoy was the horror on the faces of the crew when they discovered my daughter-in law understands and speaks Spanish fluently!

New Reviewer

My nightmare begins a very looong four and a half, yes that's 4 ½, years ago. That's when I was involuntarily terminated as a service provider in the NY, NJ, and PA markets by Empire Today, for reasons I will leave unmentioned at this time.

Empire Today has not paid me in full, and continues to refuse to do so, for services rendered. Furthermore substantial deductions made from checks paid to me, which are held in an escrow account, also remain unreturned. Combine the just mentioned and you'll get a staggering five/ six figure total.

Unfortunately I can't show the actual per job invoiced amount and/ or what specific work orders have not been paid for, due to Empire refusing to issue even just the recaps for all the checks, that have been paid within the timeline in question. Although these recaps were supposed to be issued on a weekly basis, they were actually made available to me when the accounting department "˜had the time' to prepare them. Now this does makes the battle ahead more difficult, but believe you me I AM DETERMINED TO COLLECT WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY OWED TO ME.

I have had face to face conversations, made phone calls, left voice mails, sent countless e-mails and even certified letters, with and to Empire Today associates and/ or management team members, all to no avail. In fact judging from past experience, I honestly believe this report will incite a joy to some of these management team members.

This company knows exactly who I am and is very well aware of the state of affairs I find myself in stemming from the intentional nonpayment. I may not have on staff investigative agencies and law firms, or the ability to compete financially, that doesn't however mean that I can't do battle in the court of public opinion.

I am exasperated at the notion that my efforts to have Empire Today pay outstanding amounts have resulted only in the amusement of certain people at my expense. I have provided two and a half years of service at three of this company's branches, on many, many, many occasions going way beyond the call of duty. I have spent more time in company offices and have more familiarity of day to day events and operations, than even some of the management team members.

I will post an update and also start a blog, where I will in fine detail discuss all my experiences, share relevant documents, images and even some fascinating conversations that have taken place, for all interested in a real account of how, when, who, what, why, where and of course HOW MUCH. I will share how customers, employees and subcontractors are treated and not only spoken to, but spoken about, especially when one's services are no longer required.

In the meantime however I need to find more places where complaints can be posted and file this very report.

Thank you for reading,

X_Empire_Installer

Empire carpeting: workers were great. Carpeting is very inferior, shows seams where there aren't any.

Threads pulled, looks crummy period. Not a very big selection for the price. It actually looks dirty. The salesman asked me what I thought was a fair price and I sure overpriced it.

Should have checked further before committing to Empire. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. I think they should be put of business before other people get taken for a ride.

I am going to try to get new carpeting from a reputable dealer and will check on line first. What more can I say?

Anyone who has any pets should know better then to buy berber. I own three know, five within the last year and berber loops get pulled by the nails from the dogs. Shame on you for blaming it on the carpet when your dogs more than likely caused the pulls.

#72863

Dang, I wish I had researched this company before I paid $4000 for *** berber carpeting. They say all the damage is from my dog.....

HA! No *** cheap carpet and poor workmanship are the problem. They sent out an "independent" carpet inspector but when I called about the inspection, they had to logon to a different site so those "independent" inspectors are in their back pocket.

Said they would come out to fix a couple areas but for the most part, I am screwed. Carpet is only 16 months old and looks like ***!

Empire Today Flooring

Very dissatisfied. Had to pay 50.00 for estimate for flooring and carpet.

Did not receive my 50.00 back for almost 30 days after I notified the salesman that I was not going with empire because their estimate was 5,000 more than what our local company was. Very unprofessional and a total rip off!!!! Found out that the salesman that came to my house did not even cancel my order and that they had ordered my flooring and carpet.

Big mistake to go with empire.Trying to contact them by phone the person I talked to told me several times that my check was in the mail, obviously it wasn't as it took almost 30 days to get to me. She was so unprofessional, tried to tell me several times that I only had the sales person out for carpet not flooring
